Did you ever notice that some years your favorite colors are in every store, and other years when there’s hardly a single thing in your favorite colors- nothing that looks like it fits in with your current clothes? I love that feeling when I go shopping and my favorite color is e.v.e.r.y.w.h.e.r.e! It’s so easy to find new pieces and the pieces that fill out my wardrobe. Woo hoo! In contrast, there are years when I can't find a thing. If you’ve ever wondered why that is, look no further- it’s usually due in part to color forecasting by the Pantone Color Institute.
That’s part of what’s fun about the biannual Pantone color forecast- you’ll know right away if it’ll be easy to find your color or not. The biannual Pantone color forecast helps us prepare early for what colors will end up being seen everywhere. The forecast introduces ten top colors of the season which then inspire the prominent colors that we see in stores. Here’s what you’re probably seeing more and more:
That works for me because the cool colors, blue in particular, fill my closet to the exclusion of other colors. However, what if you have a “warm” complexion; if you’re an autumn or spring and the blue tones and undertones don’t look that great on you? Or, what if they’re just not your favorite color?
If you’re having difficulty finding your favorite colors or are unsure about how to incorporate this season’s colors into your wardrobe, you can always start with an accessory or accent. Sometimes adding a pop of a new color can give you a whole new look. I always love having a pair of bright gloves that aren’t necessarily a color that I can wear in large doses. If you love one of the new colors but are concerned about how it will look with your skin tone, wear it away from your face. Try that new color in a pair of pants or new boots… or a pair of new gloves.
If some years you feel discouraged because you can’t find the colors you want, don’t worry. Some tone you love will likely be making an appearance in the coming year.
