Stain Removal Tips

My favorite clothes Stain removal wardrobe care

There's nothing like the feeling you get when you're wearing your favorite outfit, maybe a NOOR COUTURE professional hijab customized suit. You feel fresh, empowered, and ready to take on the world. That is, until you spill your fruit juice or pasta lunch all over it.

Stains can be tricky things to tackle, but don’t panic! First things first, you want to keep in mind what kind of fabric you’re dealing with. Is it something that is better off taken to the dry cleaners or can you treat it at home? Before you end up spending your paycheck on getting that stain out, there are several ways you can manage it on your own! The University of Illinois warns, “Treat stains as soon as possible after staining. The older the stain, the more difficult it will be to remove. All stain removal methods should be applied prior to laundering washable garments. Stains that have been laundered and dried are almost impossible to remove.” So, don’t let that stain set!

The University of Illinois put together an extremely thorough list of stain removing solutions that we’re sure we will find ourselves coming back to again.

We listed the remedies for some of the more common stains. What are your tried and true methods of getting out a tough stain? Tell us in the comments below!

Culprit: Lipstick
You will need:

  • Detergent
  • Dry-cleaning solvent
  • All-fabric bleach
    1. Spray or sponge with dry-cleaning solvent or treat with a stain stick. Then rub with heavy duty liquid detergent and scrub in hot water.
    2. When Step 1 is complete, follow Step 2 to remove the dye stains using bleach. Try all-fabric bleach which is less damaging to colors and fabrics. Use liquid chlorine bleach for tough dye stains on fabrics that are safe to bleach.

Culprit: Coffee
You will need:

  • Pretreatment laundry stain remover
  • Heavy-duty liquid detergent
  • Chlorine bleach or oxygen bleach
  • Dry cleaning solvent
  • Absorbent paper towels
  1. Saturate area with pre-treatment laundry stain remover (aerosol types work better on greasy stains) Wait one minute for product to penetrate the stain. For stubborn stains, rub with heavy-duty liquid detergent. Launder immediately.
  2. If color stain remains, soak/wash in chlorine bleach if safe for fabric, or in oxygen bleach.
  3. For extra heavy stains, apply dry cleaning solvent to back of the stain over absorbent paper towels. Let dry, rinse. Proceed as above.

Culprit: Fruit Juice (apple, orange, grape)

You will need:

  • Liquid dishwashing detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Enzyme presoak product
  • Chlorine bleach or oxygen bleach
  1. Soak for 15 minutes in mixture of one quart lukewarm water, one-half teaspoon liquid hand dishwashing detergent and one tablespoon white vinegar. Rinse.
  2. Sponge with rubbing alcohol, using light motions from center to edge of stain.
  3. Soak for 30 minutes in one quart warm water with one tablespoon enzyme presoak products.
  4. If color stain remains, launder in chlorine bleach if safe for the fabric, or in oxygen bleach.

This intensely pigmented and common cooking ingredient can be extremely difficult to remove. The following are a few methods you can try, should you find your clothing a victim of a bright yellow stain:

  1. Dry Detergent - This method can be used for both colour and whites. Rub the stain with a dry detergent bar and allow it to set in the stain. Once the detergent sets in, rinse it and dry it out.
  2. Water and Soap - Wash the stained fabric in cool water and soap. Dry the clothes in the sun and then wash normally with other clothes.
  3. Bleach and Water (if bleach-safe fabric)- The stained area needs to be washed and then soaked in a mixture of bleach and water. Then, soak the garment in a mixture of water and baking soda overnight.
  4. Lemon - The stained area needs to be rubbed with lemon and then dried in the sun till the stain fades. Then, wash the clothes in a normal washing cycle. This process needs to be repeated in removing stain from fabric.
